▶︎Original dyeing technique based on traditional Bingata
▶︎Miyakojima textile, gofun pigment, Kanazawa gold leaf
This work became a piece filled with many first attempts for me as a wolf painter devoted to portraying the beauty and spirit of wolves through my own original dyeing practice rooted in Bingata tradition.
The artwork is constructed in two layers using an exceptionally delicate handwoven hemp textile from Miyako Island, a traditional Okinawan fabric so thin it almost appears transparent. I dyed this rare textile using my original “Orishima” dyeing technique, then mounted black silk beneath it onto the panel to create depth and shadow within the work.
For the gold leaf, which I used for the first time in my practice, I chose authentic Kanazawa gold leaf created by traditional Japanese craftsmen. As someone who works with traditional craft materials, it was important to me that these historic textiles be paired with gold leaf made by artisans who continue those cultural traditions.
This piece expresses even more strongly the emotional strength, dignity, and spiritual beauty that I see in wolves — beings I have continued to love and paint for many year
